Who's Reading What?

Last night at our book club meeting, I admitted that would understand far more about the candidates if I knew the last 10 books they had read. Too bad nobody publishes such a reading list.

I just Googled “What books does ____ read?” to try to get a clue. Here’s what I found:

Barack Obama: “The Post-American World” by Fareed Zakaria.

John McCain: Short stories by I.B. Singer.

Joe Biden: “Promises to Keep” by himself to an audience in Philly.

Sarah Palin: Much easier to say what she is not reading. Definitely not "And Tango Makes Three," a children's book about a penguin with two dads.

Does anyone else find these politicians’ reading tastes interesting?

I do find people's reading lists fascinating; though, I'm not too quick to judge, given a perusal of my recent Amazon purchases. So many book club reads weren't exactly books I would choose. Of course, it does show that I'm rather well-rounded (or incredibly bizarre) reader.

I'm still trying to figure out Sarah Putin's kids names...we got Bristol, which is a Cream Sherry...and Willow, which we can make Aspirin from, and Track?is that right? And Trig...Trig? Who names a kid Trig?
I think she has been reading too much Snow White.
I think it says a lot that Joe Biden is reading himself to an audience in Philly. Democrats always find a way to blow it, and that just might do it for me.

Good thoughtful post Barb...can't wait to see the comments.

Kristin -- You are one of the best read people I know! I'm sure you read 3 books of your own choosing for every book club book!

Bulletholes -- Yeah, her children's names are a little bizarre, but that has no bearing on her ability to govern our country, so I don't care in the least. I would like to know what she actually does read, though!

I was very intrigued by the title The Post American World, but after reading a few reviews summing up a number of Zakaria's ideas, such as his belief that the US has a history of helping developing nations through "free trade," a misnomer of monumental proportions if you ask me, or our tireless crusade to deliver the virtues of "democracy" to the rest of the world, I decided this would be one better left on the shelf.

Mo -- We don't necessarily agree with the books we read, with the possible exception of Joe Biden, who wrote a book about himself!

Sarah Palin read books? She's too busy banning them. Today I was sent the list of books she reportedly tried to ban, and it's very long. It includes Mark Twain, Canterbury Tales, and many other classic works of literature.

MC -- My Google of Sarah Palin resulted only in mentions of book banning, not turning up a single thing she is reading! I would be curious to know what sits beside her Bible on her nightstand.

I'd be a little cautious about any of those banned book lists. I saw a lot of indications they may not be real.

I doubt if ms. pain can find the time to read*...what with running the state of alaska, caring for her FIVE children, hunting wild game, burning books, and working out (I read somewhere that because of her fitness program she was able to hide her last pregnancy for seven months)

*however, I expect she has no interest in reading - all we have to do is consider her educational journey....

was great seeing you yesterday - thanks for your assistance with my travels and helping me get in a trip to a museum! I'm so happy I was able to see effie's quilts before the show ended!

Mouse -- It was so good to see you yesterday. It makes me wish you lived closer so we could have more outings together!

You've inspired me to try another quilt. I learned a lot about what NOT to do on the first one!

We may well see you on our big trip to the Windy City!

I agree, Barbara. I'd have to say (or at least hope) that, given what I know about Obama's beliefs, he might be reading that one more as a "get both sides of the issue" type thing, because it seems to go against everything he stands for.
