Thinking About Food
As I ate a bowl of sectioned oranges and pink grapefruit for breakfast today, I remarked to my husband that I could eat that same thing every meal for at least 3 weeks and not get tired of it. This prompted one of those “what if” conversations about food.
B: What would you eat if you could only have one food, sort of like a last supper, but only one thing?
D: Chocolate cake.
B: What if you had to eat the same food for the next 3 weeks, what would it be?
D: Not chocolate cake.
B: Then what?
D: Cereal with milk, bananas, and blueberries.
Not me. For my last supper, I would have chosen expensive caviar on little pieces of toast with capers and some good sour cream. I would still go with the cut-up mixed citrus for 3 weeks. I could probably even go longer without tiring of it.
I posed the same questions to our friend who did Chinese food and a movie with us this afternoon. She went along with the chocolate cake for her last food. But she liked the idea of either salad or rice for 3 weeks.
And what foods would you request? One time and for 3 weeks straight? It makes you think about what you really like and how often it would take to make you sick of it.

One meal? I don't know. I have some serious food issues. It would be too much pressure on one food for one meal.
Three weeks is easy, though. I'd like to say ice cream but realistically would go with hummus/feta/lettuce/tortilla wraps because I do eat that for just about every meal, every day.
I'm nothing if not consistent.
I am very strict about food, so whatever I say will sound whack. I've always thought if I had a last meal a la "death row," (and there are websites that feature last meals), that I would fast and stick with water. The food before that...something pure like an apple. Some people have gone on weird streaks and eaten only foods mentioned in the Bible. To eat every day for three weeks...chocolate cake is a good answer, so is salad. I take it there are no consequences from eating this item. I had one friend who swore they could live on sushi. How about (thinking whacky)....lobster rolls...a strictly New England thing. If the buttered bread doesn't get you, the mayo or lobster/cholesterol will, thus being your last meal. :) And time to put this avatar to bed for the year.

Meat rolls and potato dumplings with saurkraut and mushrooms.
Either a last meal or for three weeks.
Corn on the cob from the Sun Prairie (WI) August corn festival with sliced tomatoes freshly picked from the garden.
For three weeks: rice and steamed vegetables with a glass of ruby red grapefruit juice.
My last meal would be a bowl of my mom or dad's famous potato and vegetable soup in chicken based stock and a hearty sourdough to dip in it. And bow tie noodles.
What could I eat for 3 weeks and never tire of it? Maybe turkey chili from Cali Tortilla w/chips.
:) I'm a salty food person.
My one meal would be breaded veal cutlets, mashed potatoes and asparagus and then chocolate cake for dessert.
Dsquared -- Didn't I tell you only one food, not an entire meal on death row? You get only chocolate cake! Still want it or are you going to trade it in for a veal cutlet? Tough choice, eh?
Everyone else -- It's a good thing we're not dealing with a fixed menu, because you all seem to want a great variety even though for each of you a 3-week supply will be a lot of it. Picture 21 tortilla wraps or a heaping platter of lobster rolls or meat and potato dumplings or a humongous pot of potato-vegetable soup. Are you sticking with your choice? I could go with Kate's rice and veggies, but I'm sorry, Kate, you don't get the grapefruit juice too. Only water!
Kassy -- I just realized you ordered 3 weeks worth of turkey chili. Even if it came with the greatest tortilla chips, I'm pretty sure you would be sick of it after 21 meals straight. I think your soup is a better choice for 3 weeks!
Big fat juicy restaurant grade T-bone Steak with SALT!!!!(Last meal)
Every day Green tossed salad.
I don't know about last meals, or what i could eat for 3 weeks solid, but the ifrst meal in Heaven for me would be a Hot Buttered Busquit with Fig Preserves like my Grandma made....
Absolutely heavenly!!!!
OL -- Where's the BEEF, eh? There is not a much better taste than salt on a rare piece of good steak. Yum...
Steve -- I'm sure your Grandma will make sure that is your first meal in heaven. You are going in that direction, aren't you? (just kidding...)
I don't know about the three weeks thing. But I'd long ago decided that my "death row" meal would be a good hot dog with deli mustard and sauerkraut, shoestring fries, and a vanilla coke; and a dessert of a black and white milkshake with a chocolate chip cookie on the side. Mmmmm... maybe I should just have one of those meals soon anyway....
I think I'd like sweet dessert for 3 weeks but I know I'd get sick of anything for that long. Last supper? Prime rib with Yorkshire pudding and gravy!
