For Love of a Cat

I am typically not a cat person, much preferring the predictable behavior of dogs. But I have taken a strong liking to a regular feline visitor in Sidamo, my favorite coffee shop on Capitol Hill.

The unique thing about this cat is he’s on a leash. He follows his owner in and jumps up on the same high stool every day while his owner orders his coffee.

The cat is a beautiful mixture of yellow and white. He’s very approachable and gives a clearly audible purr for any affection shown him.

When the coffee has been poured, the owner says, “Are you ready?”, the cat jumps down, and they make their way out of the shop.

This cat is such a regular visitor that his picture is on the wall and everyone knows him.

I could actually warm up to a cat like this. But I’m not sure I could ever convince Jake, who seems terrified of all cats.

He might like it if you got him a kitten.

I'm not a cat person either, but this one seems sweet. Maybe Jake could get used to a cat like that, but how could one find one?!

Cyndy -- I think I would want to try him out with someone else's kitten before bringing one home!

Kristin -- This really is a great cat. Worth a trip to Sidamo one morning.

a delightful cat tale. what a wonderful cat! do you know his name. definitely worth a trip to visit sidamo - and how nice that even if the cat isn't making his rounds, there's a photo on the wall!

maybe some creative person will write a children's book about this cat - 'the cat who loved coffee' - I have a weakness for children's books with real tales about interesting cats (one of my favorites is entitled Mister Got to Go: The Cat that wouldn't Leave about a cat who once lived at our favorite hotel in vancouver bc)

p.s. I don't think you can try a dog out with a kitten....introducing a dog and kitten together is a process that would take time - sometimes weeks! however, depending on a dog's age some may never adapt, no matter how laidback the cat....

Sometimes I go for a bike ride with my "Invisible Dog" leash attached to my bike.
People will ask "Whats your dogs name?" and I tell them its a cat and her name is Rover.
They always look at me like I'm nuts.

Mouse -- I recently heard a piece on NPR about the cat who is the subject of this book. Dewey looks a lot like the Sidamo cat, yes?

Bulletholes -- You are nuts, aren't you? That's why we all love you so much!

The cat in your story sounds wonderful! I've always loved cats. My daughter's cat Parker, a Maine coon cat that now lives with me while his owner is pursuing her doctorate in higher ed., is one of the most affectionate and polite animals I've ever known. He loves to cuddle and never fails to say thank you when the door is opened for him or meow his appreciation for food in his dish.

I bet that can thinks he's quite smart to get his human to walk on leash!

MOI -- I think what appeals to me about this cat is he seems so like a dog.

Pauline -- I hope Parker is still there if and when I get up to see you.

Kelly -- It was a little unclear as to who was walking whom. :)
