It's Coming Soon
I heard something on the radio yesterday (wish I could remember exactly what) that greatly accelerated the schedule for running out of fossil fuels, a very scary thought for a society that is so dependent on them. Two thoughts came to my mind.
The whole geo-political landscape would look so different without oil. Countries like Saudi Arabia which have become world powers because of it would simply revert to being deserts again. A powerful leverage would be gone, probably promoting a whole new set of countries that had whatever took its place.
My second thought was one of hope that someone smarter than I am is working on a plan for what happens when the last oil well runs dry. I’m assuming this isn’t going to happen overnight. So we need some sort of orderly shift to another technology if we are to survive.
I postulated some bizarre scenarios as the solution. What if someone came up with a way we could run our cars on the sewage we produce every day in our own homes? What if there was a way to extract power from the air around us? I’m counting on some genius to come through in time to save our civilization.
I suppose doom and gloom has been around since the beginning of time. 1984 passed and the world didn’t come to an end. We will undoubtedly get beyond this dilemma as well. But the stakes are very high if we do not.

Even if we're not near the end of oil, we really, really, really need to reduce our dependence. It's not renewable and we're awfully wasteful.
Well here's one that's been around a while but does speak to usage of garbage. http://www.biodieselsustainability.org/
One thing those Middle East countries also have a lot of is sunshine, which happens never to run out. If they were smart, they would be building a massive solar power infrastructure right now. And so would we, if we were smart.
I just bought a truck that gets 10 miles per gallon.
Kristin -- Awfully wasteful is a kind description of most of us!
Kate -- Very interesting. Hopefully before it's too late we will be able to move in directions like this one.
MC -- I don't think they are ever going to be able to pump and sell solar energy the way they have oil. It may be a big change for those in power when the oil dries up!
Bulletholes -- I hope it was cheap, given what you now have to pay for gas. Better go a lot of places in that truck now while the gas is still available! :)
I'm not sure we will ever come up with an energy source that's as powerful as oil. My guess is we'll all need to scale back our consumption of energy to better conform to whatever new energy sources (solar? windmills? ethanol?) we identify. I don't think that's a bad thing. Maybe we'll give up the exurbs, once again become more urban, grow locally produced food, walk more, and slow down.
One of the simulations that we worked on this week was the global problem of not enough fresh water. The people who know say that we will be overextended in our use of the water supply by 17% by 2015. They predict worldwide starvation, because we will not have enough water to grow enough food. They say our our lust for oil will pale in comparison to our desire for water. Hmmmmmmn... food for thought
Wow. That would challenge a lot of lives here in Texas, including mine. My x-to-be-x'd just shared with me this evening that the oil company he works for is re-structuring ... again!

Steve -- I'm with you on this, except how do you propose we become more urban and grow locally produced food (each with a patio garden)? :)
Kellyann -- What a scary thought to run out of water! It seems like with the polar ice melting, there should be no shortage of water. We would just need to desalinate it and move it around -- maybe a way to use the abandoned oil piping system?!
RDM -- Does restructuring mean downsizing? Or a way to give those on top bigger bonuses? I don't trust the oil companies!
There are all kinds of things that we do every day that most of us can't imagine avoiding! We will have to trust the next generation of scientists to figure it all out, hopefully I can play my part!
WB -- I'm counting on YOU and your generation to figure this out. Maybe you can enlist the help of those whales you are going to save one day! :)
I think my next car may have to be a mule...
Pauline -- It's interesting that we may be forced to retreat to modes of transportation from the distant past -- mules for example!
I think we are on the cusp of great changes in energy.
