Humor Me

It seemed like the main objective of a recent somewhat weirdo massage therapist I saw was to make me laugh. But try as he might, I refused, possibly because I didn’t find his draping technique amusing. (I’ll spare you the details on that.)

However, today as I was swimming at the local rec center, I suddenly had a revelation that I badly needed to inject some humor in my life. A water aerobics class was in progress in the neighboring lanes and all of a sudden, I found myself kicking in rhythm to “I got chills, they’re multiplying” and other music from Grease. I’m sure there was a smile on my face as I stuck my head out to breathe.

I also became aware of a very sunny section in the middle of the pool that felt so good to swim through as I made my way back and forth. The warm bright light was almost delicious.

I realized that I couldn’t remember the last time I really laughed hard at anything. I think it’s been a long time. I had this thought of renting a bunch of funny movies on NetFlix and just laughing my head off. You know those big belly laughs that make your whole body shake? I think it would feel good.

I’m making a list. What funny movies can you suggest?

There's nothing like a good belly laugh! I enjoy classics - Some Like It Hot or That Touch of Mink - full of hijinks, much like anything starring Franky and Annette. They make me laugh in a wholesome kind of way. I also enjoy a good mocumentary, like Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. Office Space cracks me up, too.

I'm a big fan of Princess Bride as well as anything by Monty Python.

Silver Streak with Gene (egad, I can't remember his name) and Richard Pryor is really funny, too.

Plane, Trains and Automobiles, The Jerk (sorry, I love Steve Martin--good old infantile humor!) and Raising Arizona. Those three will increase my endorphins every time!

I laughed a lot at Office Space (having worked in an office, you'll relate.) And then there's silly stuff like Young Frankenstein, also with Gene Wilder. Shirley Valentine has funny moments but is really heartwarming in general. Same for Joe Versus the Volcano. And Bagdad Cafe is not what I'd call funny but it is incredibly heartwarming.

Here's something that will make you die laughing right this second and it will only take about 2 minutes to watch!

Something about the way you worded your first paragraph made me laugh - sorry...

One of my all time favorite hilarious movies is "What's Up Doc?" starring Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal. Some Like It Hot is always great.

I have laughed very hard at some movies lately, and highly recommend it. Of course, now I can't remember which ones. Your taste is probably different than mine, but I love "There's Something About Mary." I also agree with Lacochran about "Office Space." I was just thinking today about a friend who dressed up as the boss from the movie last Halloween, and his costume was hilariously spot-on. There are also plenty of clips from funny movies available on YouTube, if you poke around there for a few minutes.

Oh, now I remember what cracked me up so hard: the hilariously cheesy Indian dance video during first 5 minutes of "Ghost World." I had to pop it in after the abysmal "Slumdog Millionaire" to remember what a really good and original movie looked like. Bonus: if you rent the "Ghost World" dvd, the extended version of the video is in the special features. And the rest of the movie has lots of laughs too, as well as dramatic and poignant moments.

Kelly, i watched Bottle Shock a few weeks ago. Alan rickman is pretty good. barbara would like that one.

My favorite for many years has been "Paint your Wagon". Lee Marvinis hilarious and for all its faults it has just the right amount of irreverence for me..that is to say....LOTS!

Went to dinner last night w/ my ladies church group at a Mexican restaurant. We were all laughing so hard, there were tears in our eyes,we used menus to fan our faces, and we got up to go use the bathroom about 5 times.
Our fair town's policemen (about 4 or 5 of them) were eating there too, and one of them came over and said "next time, I want to hang out with yall". Good times, good times.
Good luck finding videos to watch, I'd just recommend hanging out w/ some people who make you laugh! Tina

It's A Gift, WC Fields; A Night At the Opera, the Marx Brothers; Way Out West, Laurel and Hardy. Actually, anything by any of those guys!! Oh, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, too, and the original Producers with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel.

Paint you wagon is a good one. Another one with Lee Marvin is Cat Baloo (I'm not sure about the spelling of it.) I also love almost anything by National Lampoon (Van Wilder, Family Vacation, Christmas Vacation). Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Princess Bride, and The Labyrinth are a few more, happy hunting!
