Better than a nap any day
I have always loved this song by The Starland Vocal Band. The band is long defunct. Bill and Taffy Danoff have been divorced for decades. But the concept is alive and well!
Afternoon Delight
The Starland Vocal Band
Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
Gonna grab some afternoon delight
My motto's always been 'when it's right, it's right'
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night?
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day
And we know the night is always gonna be there any way
Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always thought a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite
But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling
A little afternoon delight
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Please be waiting for me, baby, when I come around
We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down
Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight!

LOL -- I haven't thought about this song in years. I liked it when I was a kid, but of course I had no idea what it was about!
Funny song...used to great effect in "Goodwill Hunting"...i hated it when it first came out, but its one of those songs that needed to be written, like it or not.
I see what you have on your mind today.
Good for you.
I loved that song! I actually heard it before the single was releases. The band was opening for John Denver and featured that song (and told a cute story about the inspiration for the song). Was thrilled when the single was released and sorry the band never really had any other success.
I love that song even though I never really knew the lyrics.
Yeah, you do know that the song has long since jumped the shark and is now typically referenced for comdedy purposes. I can't say I ever loved the song, but I do like how the words are dirtier than the sweet vocal stylings would lead you to believe.
BTW, there was (is?)a restaurant on MacArthur Blvd. in the Palisades that may or may not be called Starland, the owners of which I think were in the band. I spoke to one of the owners there once, but forget the connection.
Maritzia -- The band was especially close to John Denver, so I'm not surprised they were opening for him. Occasionally they still get together and they always do a lot of his songs.
MC -- The Starland Cafe, owned by Bill Danoff, recently closed its doors. It was actually a great restaurant. We went there one New Year's Eve and remnants of the band performed, including Bill and Taffy and their now-grown daughter, who was on the Starland wait-staff.
Too bad the place closed. I was taken there for lunch on one of my last days in DC in 2006 by my friends who own Le Reve hair salon down the street (shameless hair plug), and I really liked the casual vibe. I guess I spoke to Taffy or her daughter (who no doubt was conceived in the afternoon).
Oops, just reread the divorce bit. I guess it wasn't Taffy. On the other hand, maybe it was. The Le Reve owners are also a divorced couple, and have happily worked together for years.
"Afternoon delight" is a wonderful pseudonym (that's not the word I mean - what do I mean??) for a delicious treat...could be any sort of sweet thing! But your meaning is my favorite...:-)
F.
MC -- I think it was an amicable divorce because I have heard them perform together since then. I don't think Taffy worked at the restaurant, but everyone there would have known her.
Anon -- A lot of sweet possibilities indeed!
Steve -- A lot of songs take on an entirely new meaning when we grow up, yes?
BH -- I had forgotten the song was used in Goodwill Hunting, a great movie.
Gewels -- One of the bene's of being retired...
Kristin -- This song probably came out about the time you were born!
I thought it was the Captain and Tenille... but that might have been "Muskrat love"
some time
pretty much the same subject
::Laugh:::
I am right there with you on that one. And it is a fantastic song that I remember LOVING to sing harmony on when I was a wee lad. Now that I am grown it is on one of my favorite iPod playlists.
So, things are going well with the hip?
I always thought they did a lovely job with Emmylou Harris' "Boulder to Birmingham."
